slow news vs. clickbait

moving away from online and digital news.

it’s fluff, mostly clickbait,

meant to satisfy advertisers.

so laden with advertising that you can barely read the copy.

i’m not reading daily newspapers either.

i’m simply moving away from ‘daily’ news.

two reasons:

most ‘news’ isn’t news,

it’s opinion.

(i call fox news, cnn, and msnow opinion-entertainment)

secondly, it repeats itself.

news rarely changes.

look at 25-year old headlines.

same stories.

same bad guys.

same good guys.

same debates.

same arguments made.

slower paced.

longer form writing.

meant to inform;

not get more clicks for advertisers.

writers actually make arguments.

have put in deep thought.

completed deeper research and study.

online, daily opinion-entertainment

is feeding the bitter division,

endless narcissism, hate,

and vitriol feeding our discourse.

it results in a divided community,

intense partisanship, and in the end,

none of the problems are solved.

as for me, i’m for slowing things down,

taking my time,

and consuming content that

informs, reasons, and educates.

and these days, that’s

harder to find.

now, back to my magazine…
